The Beginning

The reasons behind the new project. I am about to ramble so bare with me. On April the 28 2014 in Winston County Mississippi we had a F4 tornado touch down and do a lot of damage. House were lost and lives were lost.

These are a few pictures I took with my phone after the tornado. Moments after the tornado came through I started helping with clearing of roadways so ambulances and rescue personal could help trapped and injured. I was very proud of my community on this day. I saw people show up from all over to help with no regards to their own personal safety. They just wanted to help their friends, family, and neighbors. I have no numbers on how many were effected by this tornado but hundreds of homes were destroyed, countless were injured, and many lost their lives.

Over the next few days of helping people sort through their belongings and helping tarp roofs of houses that could be saved I became saddened by all that had happened. Though through it all most stayed up beat and even laughed at the events. Some even put up signs in their yards making jokes about their house being for sale and that it was a nice fixer upper. It was truly a humbling experience.

The last seven weeks since the tornado I have talked to many people about what they were going to do, repair, rebuild, buy new, or move. I started to hear the same story over and over again. Their insurance company was not giving them enough money to rebuild or even repair what was lost. It is a sad situation but a house that was valued at lets say $75,000 will cost $150,000 to $200,000 to rebuild if it was built lets say 30 years ago. The insurance companies are only paying value of house if that much and not the replacement value. A lot of these people can not afford to rebuild.

So now comes to my project of reclaiming old buildings and turning them into apartments. I plan on using as much reclaimed materials as I can. I will also be using green building techniques to help make the apartment more energy efficient. Well that was a little insight into why I am doing this. Thanks
